Stephen Gold: looking for hotels that foster community among travelers.

" I'm looking for hotels, agriturismi and, possibly, alternative lodgings that fit into a category I don't really have a name for. Let me describe it. Twice, in my all-too-brief-and-rare travel adventures, I've come across places that weren't just hotels, but amounted to lively, comfortable and affordable meeting spots for international travelers - places where the guests don't just glance at each other in the lobby and quietly shuffle off to their rooms, but where people actually plop down on sofas next to strangers or talk across patio tables about their travels, the city, politics, whatever. Places where an afternoon on a patio or in a lounge with the other guests would be time well spent."

" As I say, I've traveled too little to give a long list of examples, but the two that come to mind are the Beehive in Rome and Las Mariposas in Oaxaca. In both of those places I found a sense of community fostered by the owners, as if the hotels were designed with just that kind of cultural exchange in mind. I met travelers from all over the globe while staying at both - and those stays are among my favorite travel memories. "

Mid-range, elegant and low-key atmosphere, this property has been reviewed and recommended by a Lonely Planet author. Las Mariposas offers six studio apartments with small kitchens, and seven rooms. All are large, spotlessly clean and simply but prettily decorated. It's a tranquil, friendly and very secure place. Free wi-fi, a kitchen for guests, luggage storage and a good breakfast are among the extras that make this a good deal.

" Our family stayed at Las Mariposas, just down the street from Llano Park (on the street that heads uphill from the park). Staff at Las Mariposas were exceptionally helpful as we were trying to leave during the bus strike last summer, and the coffee and the interior decor were also great. Ask for a room back from the street, though. Golandrinos looked nice but didn't have rooms for four (our family) and so was much pricier for two rooms than the ones we went with. Have fun! Suzanne "

" María Teresa Villarreal, the owner and operator of this pleasant little place, proudly shows off her restored colonial-style home. It's not fancy, but the lived-in feeling suits most people just fine; in fact, there are a few long-term guests from time to time. You can mingle with other guests on the open patio gladdened with laurel and lemon trees. Those staying in standard rooms share a brightly-colored outdoor kitchen, while those who have booked studios have kitchenettes with coffeemakers and other essentials. Pros: value, helpful hosts. Cons: Furnishings are simple, some studios are cramped, noise from courtyard. "
